Key findings
In 2021, there was a clear upturn in the number of suspected hate crimes. A total of 1,026 reports of offences classified as suspected hate crimes were filed by the police in 2021. The figure is 20 % higher than in 2020. Cases motivated by the victim’s religious background constituted 13 % of the incidents. The number of complaints of crimes targeting the victim’s religion or belief (n=133) increased by 23 % from 2020. Islam or Muslim individuals were targeted in 55 cases, which is 41 % more than in the previous year (39).
Methodology (Qualitative/Quantitative and exact type used, questionnaires etc)
The statistics are based on crime reports retrieved from the National Police Information System using hate crimes related search terms. All identified reports are read and classified based on the information found in the reports. For example, a case is considered a hate crime, when the victim, the police or a witness has expressed a suspicion of a potential hate motive behind the crime.
